Migrating to CiviCRM: a case study

Speaker(s):
Alain Benbassat, ICT Project Leader at VKW
Christophe Deman, ICT Manager at VKW

VKW is a member organization from Belgium and migrated in June 2014 from a custom developed CRM (C# + SQL Server) to CiviCRM.

This session will focus on the complete migration process: from gathering requirements to going live. Between these two milestones, we had to overcome many obstacles. There were technical obstacles, like learning CiviCRM, learning the API, creating extensions, choosing the right hardware, programming the data conversion in PHP… And there were organizational obstacles, like bringing 15 users from different parts of the country together every month, combining the migration work with our “normal” ICT activities... Last but not least, we also had to deal with human factors, like resistance to change, keeping the focus, and end-user training.

The iterative and incremental approach of the migration process helped us keeping an ongoing dialogue with our users, and ultimately led to a smooth transition to CiviCRM.
